Introduction of School of Life Sciences

The 21st century has seen a rapid development of life sciences, and it is believed that the exploration of life’s secrets will run through this century. Being at the forefront of Natural Science, life sciences is attracting wide attention in the world.

School of Life Sciences was derived from former Department of Biology, which was founded in 1960 by Professor Weisun Tao, a famous biochemist in China. In 1998, School of Life Sciences was established at Jilin University. It has one national key discipline (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), and two provincial key disciplines (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Biochemical Pharmacy).

Currently, there are 102 faculty members in our school, including 55 professors, 37 associate professors and 10 lecturers. We have state-of-the-art research platforms including National Engineering Laboratory for AIDS Vaccine, Key Laboratory for Molecular Enzymology and Engineering, and National & Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for the Breeding and Cultivation of Chinese Medicinal Herbs.

Relying on the existing scientific research platforms we have undertaken a series of key scientific and technological projects, including National Science and Technology Major Projects, The National Basic Research Program of China, and key projects at the Ministry of Education and provincial level. Research strength in our school includes study on AIDS vaccine, molecular enzymology, drug metabolism, cellular signaling, ancient DNA analysis and etc.

Our school actively engages in international cooperation. To date, our faculty members have been invited to make reports and academic collaboration in the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Israel, Denmark, Mongolia and etc. We have appointed Prof. Edmond Fischer (1992 Nobel Prize Laureate in Physiology or Medicine) and Professor Hartmut Michel (1988 Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry) as our Honorary Professors.

Our school has over 1000 undergraduate and graduate students with a high percentage of students pursuing graduate studies in both domestic and abroad. Students actively participate in extracurricular activities, and have received a large number of national and International awards. We focus on the development of students' knowledge, innovative spirit, personality, capacity, willpower and other internal qualities, aiming to guide students towards a comprehensive growth. The quality of students training has been continuously improved and our alumni have been well-received by all walks of life.
